Generally, when you look at a picture your eyes will seek out specific components in order. Firstly, they will try to find the lightest part of the scene. If you have a brilliant blue sky, for instance, this will probably be seen first. Similarly, if a setting sun is lighting up the last vestiges of twilight, the eye will soon be drawn here first. Then, the element of sharpness is noticed, such as some craggy rocks clearly in focus placed in your foreground. Blurry areas will not be quite as noticeable. Lastly, vibrant colours will likely be sought out, over any flat, dead colors.

The rule of thirds is a powerful, although comparatively simple to apply, component that differentiates a a typical one and a great photograph. You just imagine your viewfinder image divided into nine equal sections, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. The key then is to place your primary subject of interest at, or close to, one of the intersecting points. Finally, it is important to introduce depth, to make your two dimensional image have a three dimensional feel.
