Generally speaking, when you look at a picture your eyes will seek out particular elements in order. Primarily, they're going to try to find the lightest part of the scene. So if you have a brilliant blue sky, for example, this will likely be discovered first. Similarly, if a setting sun is lighting up the last vestiges of twilight, the eye will soon be attracted here first. Then, the component of sharpness is found, such as some craggy stone clearly in focus set within your foreground. Blurred areas will not be too noticeable. Lastly, vivid colours will undoubtedly be sought out, over any shades that are flat, dead.

The rule of thirds is a relatively easy to employ, but strong, component that differentiates a great photograph from an ordinary one. You simply imagine your viewfinder image split into nine equal parts, using two vertical lines and two horizontal. The key then is to place your primary topic of interest at, or close to, one of the intersecting points. You are going to notice, if you compare this to an image with similar subject in the centre of the frame, that the former generates a much more memorable, and interesting, picture. This works because the viewer has some space to move within the image.

The horizon concerns. Generally speaking, it is best to have the horizon placed one third from top or the bottom of the frame - along, or near to, among the aforementioned intersecting lines. This gives a good sense of value to the horizon, which isn't attained if put halfway up the picture. A reliable photography course online will provide tuition in using the rule of thirds in other kinds of photos.

Finally, it's important to introduce depth, to make your two dimensional image have a three dimensional feel. To attain this, you have to give middle a foreground and background to travel around to the viewer's eyes. By means of example, you could have a tree in the foreground (set at one of the intersections mentioned before), some tumbling, shadowy hills beyond that, as well as a lovely blue sky above. The horizon between sky and hills could be two thirds up the picture.

Experiment using these principles of composition and also you need to observe your pictures take on a significantly more powerful look. Remember what the audience be looking for, will subconsciously - and give them what they want. I implemented these principles my images improved in leaps and bounds and when I took a photography course online. Yours will too.
