Generally, when you take a look at a picture your eyes will seek out specific elements in order. Firstly, they will look for the lightest part of the scene. So if you've a brilliant blue sky, for instance, this will be found first. In the same way, if a setting sun is lighting up the last vestiges of dusk, the eye will probably be brought here first. Next, the element of sharpness is discovered, such as some craggy stone certainly in focus set within your foreground. Blurred areas won't be quite as noticeable. Lastly, bright colours will likely be sought out, over any dull, lifeless colors.

The rule of thirds is a powerful, although comparatively easy to use, component that differentiates a a typical one and a great photograph. You simply imagine your viewfinder image split into nine equal sections, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. The key then is to put your primary topic of interest at, or close to, among the intersecting points. You are going to notice, if you compare this to an image with exactly the same subject in the centre of the frame, that the former generates an intriguing, and much more memorable, picture. This works as the audience has some room to go within the image.

The horizon concerns. Broadly speaking, it is best to have the horizon put one third from top or the bottom of the frame - along, or near to, one of the aforementioned intersecting lines. This provides a sense of significance if set midway up the picture to the horizon, which is not realized. A dependable photography lessons online will provide tuition in using the rule of thirds in other types of pictures.

Eventually, it's important to introduce depth, to make your two dimensional image have a three dimensional feel. To reach this, you need to give the viewer's eyes middle, a foreground and background to travel around. By way of example, you could have a tree in the foreground (put at one of the intersections mentioned before), some billowing, shadowy hills beyond that, plus a lovely blue sky above. The horizon between sky and hills could be two thirds up the picture.

Experiment using all these principles of composition and you should see that your pictures take on a significantly stronger look. Recall what the viewer will, almost subconsciously, be looking for - and give them what they need. These principles were employed by me my images enhanced in leaps and bounds and when I took a photography class online. Hopefully, yours will too.
