Enhance Your Landscape Digital Photography Utilizing Split Neutral Density (ND) Filters
You'll find the sky is a lot brighter than the landscape often when taking landscape pictures. This may allow it to be difficult to keep detail in the sky with no landscape being too dark, and to keep detail in the landscape without the sky being too glowing.
One alternative to this difficulty is the split neutral density filter. This really is a filter that may be placed in front of the lens. While the other half is dark, one half of the filter is clear.
Normally, you may put the dark section of the filter over the sky to darken the sky, while the section that is clear is placed over the landscape. You do not have to worry about the sky being overly glowing and can then show correctly for the landscape.

Split neutral density filters - graduated edge and hard edge. Graduated border means that there is a soft transition between the dark and soft portions of the filter. As the transition seems more natural than a hard edge soft edge or graduated split neutral density filters are usually preferred for landscape photography.
Tough border split neutral density filters are somewhat more useful when taking a photo with a well defined horizon that forms a solid line. The split line of the filter may subsequently be placed along this line. They are specifically useful when the sun is on or simply over the horizon.
Both hard edge and calibrated split neutral density filters can be found in a range of strengths: ND0.3 = 1 stop
ND0.6 = 2 stops
ND0.9 = 3 stops
The larger in difference between the brightness of the landscape and the sky, the more powerful the filter you will desire to utilize.
Although split neutral density filters are offered as glass screw-in filters, most photographers prefer a Cokin P or similar 'slot-in' based filter system. This allows you to easily rotate the filter and transfer the filter up and down, placing the dim section of the filter exactly where you have a need for it.

The key advantage of split neutral density filters over applications procedures of equalizing exposure in a photo is that you can see the outcome when you take the photo. In addition, it saves on the work involved with software options that are based.
The disadvantage, however, is where the horizon is clearly outlined, that split neutral density filters work best. You'll find the very top of the object will probably be darkened while the bottom won't, if you have objects, for example trees in your image, that are both below and above the horizon. This is the main issue with split neutral density filters, and in cases like these a software alternative to managing the exposure could possibly be preferable.

Most communities have some kind of historical society. In the event you can not find a listing for one, try contacting the local library. Pay them a visit, once you have tracked them down and request to see old photos of the region. Find a chance taken back as far as possible, the middle 1800's is ideal, and get a copy of the photo. Now take your gear, go to exactly the same spot and shoot a modern day photo etc., from precisely the same vantage point Try to duplicate as much of the photo as you can... if there's a horse and buggy going down the street, include an automobile at exactly the same area in your photo. Whether there are folks strolling down the pavement, set in yours also! I am certain you know what I mean! You are attempting to replicate as much as you can. (Do not forget to take the photo at the same time of day!)
Print them out side by side, once you are finished. This endeavor is going to teach you more than you can really ever call! It'll educate you to try to find and be observant of details, although it'll not just teach you the way to work with your gear. Not only that, this job is ideal for kids just starting out in photography all the way through old retired professional shooters. It all depends on you and just how much detail you need to communicate.
For example... In the original photograph with people wandering down the pavement... does your photo show them?

A photo by a teenaged beginner may not. It's OK. Shoot at your own level! Are you sophisticated? In that case the strollers are contained! We may even go deeper in case you want to... Is it the same size family group as the original? Are they made up of the same combination? (Man, woman, three kids.)
To put it differently, you can keep it simple - no folks at all! Just the location. Or you'll be able to get as complicated as you desire. This project is a guaranteed way to get known in your community - once people have seen your before and following pictures. Compile them in a group and give a copy to the local historical society, library, Chamber of Commerce.
Then, do it! Before long you will have enough of them to put together a 'then and now' type of publication! Chambers of Commerce love this kind of thing!
You ARE going to appreciate this photo project! Not only will you have plenty of fun, learn to master your equipment and produce a critical photo 'eye.' You will quickly become known in the community for your photography! To find out more, assess the resources box!
