Generally, when you look at a picture your eyes will seek out certain elements in order. Firstly, they are going to try to find the lightest portion of the scene. So if you've a bright blue sky, for instance, this will probably be seen first. In the same way, if a setting sun is lighting up the last vestiges of twilight, the eye will probably be drawn here first. Next, the element of sharpness is discovered, such as some craggy rocks clearly in focus set in your foreground. Fuzzy areas won't be too noticeable. Lastly, bright colours will be sought out, over any colors that are dull, dead.

The rule of thirds is a strong, although relatively easy to apply, component that distinguishes a great photograph from an ordinary one. You simply visualize your viewfinder image divided into nine equal sections, using two vertical lines and two horizontal. The key then is to place your main subject of interest at, or close to, one of the intersecting points. You are going to find, should you compare this to an image with the same subject in the centre of the frame, that the former produces a considerably more memorable, and intriguing, picture. This works as the audience has some space to move within the image.

Another rule of thirds concerns the horizon. Broadly speaking, it is best to possess the horizon placed one third from the bottom or top of the frame - along, or near to, one of the aforementioned intersecting lines. This gives a good sense of importance to the horizon, which isn't realized if set midway up the picture. A photography lessons online that is reliable will provide tuition in using the rule of thirds in other types of photographs.

Finally, it is necessary to introduce depth, to make your two dimensional image have a three dimensional feel. To reach this, you must give a foreground, middle and background to travel around to the viewer's eyes. By way of example, you could have a tree in the foreground (put at one of the intersections mentioned before), some tumbling, shadowy hills beyond that, and also a beautiful blue sky above. The horizon between sky and hills could be two-thirds up the picture.

Experiment using these principles of composition and also you should observe that your pictures take on a look that is substantially stronger. Recall what the audience be looking for will, almost subconsciously - and give them what they want. These principles were applied by me my images enhanced in leaps and bounds and when I first took a photography course online. Yours will also.
